Rothera does not observe daylight saving time. Clocks stay on UTC-03:00 all year long.
Rothera Time (ROTHER)
Rothera Time is used in the remote Antarctic research station of Rothera, the British Antarctic Survey's main logistics hub. It operates on a fixed UTC−03:00 offset year-round, with no daylight saving adjustments, making it consistent and predictable for researchers working in one of Earth's harshest environments.
At such extreme southern latitudes, seasonal daylight variation is already dramatic—from near-constant sun in summer to near-constant darkness in winter. DST would provide no practical benefit to station operations.
Rothera adopted the current UTC−03:00 offset in 2021, replacing the previous UTC−04:00 schedule to better align with supply flights from South America.
Antarctica's Rothera Research Station uses this timezone, operated by the British Antarctic Survey. No other civilian population uses it.
Most Antarctic stations do not observe DST since the continent has no permanent civilian population. Research stations follow the timezone of their parent country or choose their own offsets for practical scheduling.
