History
How Tonga keeps time.
For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, each Tongan island effectively kept its own local mean time based on longitude, with no unified standard. As telegraph and shipping links with British-administered Fiji and New Zealand strengthened, pressure grew to adopt a common time. Tonga adopted a standard time of UTC+12:20 in 1945 and moved to UTC+13:00 in 1961. Although Tonga lies east of the 180° meridian, the International Date Line bends around it, so it keeps the same calendar day as its western neighbours.
At UTC+13:00, Tonga is one of the first countries to greet each new calendar day. It observed daylight saving time (UTC+14:00) over the summers of 1999–2002 and again in 2016–17, and has stayed on UTC+13:00 all year since January 2017.
