Timor-Leste's time zone history reflects the country's turbulent modern past. Portuguese Timor adopted UTC+08:00 in 1912. Japanese occupation brought UTC+09:00 in 1942, which remained in use after the war. In 1976, during the Indonesian occupation, the territory was moved to Central Indonesia Time (UTC+08:00).
Timor-Leste returned to UTC+09:00 on 17 September 2000, under UN administration and before formal independence in 2002, and has kept it ever since.
