History
How Namibia keeps time.
Before independence, Namibia (then South West Africa under South African rule) followed South African Standard Time (SAST, UTC+2), the offset it largely still uses today. However, in 1993, after gaining independence in 1990, Namibia briefly adopted a "winter time" arrangement, moving to UTC+1 from 1994 to 2017. This was largely aimed at saving energy by aligning waking hours more closely with daylight in winter months.
However, in 2017, Namibia decided to abolish winter time and return permanently to UTC+2. The change, effective from August 3, 2017, was motivated by public dissatisfaction with the split between "winter" and "summer" clocks, as well as confusion regarding time differences with neighboring countries that did not follow a similar practice. Today, Namibia sticks with the simpler UTC+2 offset, aligning its working and business hours with South Africa year-round.
Did you know?
Things about Namibia's time.
Namibia's decision to stick to UTC+2 (Central Africa Time) means it shares a timezone with South Africa, making coordination and business dealings between neighboring countries seamless. Its location in southern Africa means sunrise and sunset times are relatively consistent year-round, unlike in higher latitudes. While the country doesn't observe DST, the clear desert climate and warm, dry air make solar noon and clock time closely aligned for much of the country.
For travelers and remote workers, Namibia's steady offset eliminates the need to worry about DST transitions. If you're syncing with South African time, you can set your watch once, and you're good. The country's use of "WAT" (West Africa Time) has also been informally mixed with CAT, though these are functionally the same UTC+2 offset.
