History
How Japan keeps time.
Japan's adoption of a standardized timezone is a significant part of its modernization during the Meiji era. Before this, each town kept its own local time based on the sun's position.
In anticipation of adopting a standard time, the government proposed several candidates for the prime meridian. The Chuo (Central) meridian of Japan, which passes through the Tokyo Observatory at 139°44′40.1″ east longitude, was selected in 1886. This established Japan's nine-hour advance on Greenwich.
The formal empire-wide adoption of Japan Standard Time (JST) occurred on January 1, 1888. This synchronized the entire nation, including the assimilation of territories like the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) and Karafuto (Sakhalin).
Post-WWII, the Allied occupation (SCAP/GHQ) introduced Daylight Saving Time (DST) in 1948. However, due to practical issues with food shortages and worker fatigue, the policy was abolished in 1952 upon the restoration of sovereignty.
Did you know?
Things about Japan's time.
Japan Standard Time (JST) is exactly UTC+09:00. Despite stretching over 3,000 kilometers from north to south and west to east, Japan observes only one official timezone.
While Japan doesn't currently observe DST, it has a complex history with it. It was briefly implemented during the post-WWII occupation but was quickly abandoned.
There is ongoing debate in Japan about the usefulness of DST, often proposed as a measure to save energy or boost economic activity ('cool biz'), but it has never been readopted.
