About Brazil's time
3 time zones.
Brazil stretches across four official time zones, though only three are in practice today after 2019 reforms. With such wide east-west reach, coordinating across the country means keeping an eye on the clock — and the calendar, since some regions used to observe daylight saving time.

History
How Brazil keeps time.
Brazil's timekeeping has shifted many times as the country grew and modernized. In the 19th century, each city set clocks by local solar noon. As railroads and telegraphs demanded consistency, Brazil adopted standard time in 1913, initially using three zones based on longitude.
Throughout the 20th century, boundaries were redrawn for political and economic reasons, sometimes splitting states or moving them between zones. Daylight saving time began experimentally in 1931 and was used off and on until becoming regular in 1985, mainly in southern states where summer evenings are longer.
In 2019, Brazil simplified its system, reducing from four active zones to three by eliminating UTC-02:00 in parts of the north. This reflected changing energy patterns and reduced the need for daylight saving adjustments, which were officially ended in 2019.

Things about Brazil's time.
Brazil's time zones don't always follow state lines — some states are split between zones, especially in the Amazon region. For example, parts of Pará use a different offset than others, which can confuse travelers and logistics.
The end of daylight saving time in 2019 simplified scheduling nationwide, but it also means southern cities like Porto Alegre no longer shift clocks in summer. Before that, about a third of Brazil's population adjusted their clocks for four months each year.
Geographically, Brazil's far west (Acre and parts of Amazonas) is nearly aligned with Peru and Colombia but uses UTC-05:00, creating a one-hour difference from neighbors despite similar longitudes. This affects cross-border business and media broadcasts.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Brazil's time zone, daylight saving rules, and how to handle it in software. Can't find what you need? Email [email protected].
- How many time zones does Brazil have now?
- Brazil currently uses three official time zones: UTC-03:00 (most of the country), UTC-04:00 (Amazonas, Rondônia, Roraima, and parts of Pará and Mato Grosso), and UTC-05:00 (Acre and western Amazonas). The UTC-02:00 zone was eliminated in 2019.
- Does Brazil observe daylight saving time?
- No. Brazil ended daylight saving time in 2019. Before that, it was observed mainly in southern and southeastern states from October to February.
- Why do some Brazilian states have different time zones than their neighbors?
- Time zone boundaries often follow state borders for administrative convenience, not just longitude. For example, Acre uses UTC-05:00 while neighboring Peru uses UTC-05:00 too, but parts of Amazonas use UTC-04:00 despite being at similar longitudes.
- What is the main time zone in Brazil?
- The majority of Brazil, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and BrasÃlia, uses UTC-03:00, known as BrasÃlia Time (BRT).
- Are there any unusual time zone situations within Brazil?
- Yes — some states like Pará are split between UTC-03:00 and UTC-04:00, meaning cities in the same state can be an hour apart. This affects transportation and communication.
- How do I know which time zone a Brazilian city uses?
- Check the IANA time zone database or official Brazilian government sources. Major cities have stable zones, but rural areas near borders may follow different rules.
